Buffy

Ok if I hear the word "metaphor" one more time tonight I will vomit for sure...

Well I actually found the article pretty interesting. I never thought of ever watching the show, but after reading that article I'm definitely second guessing myself a little bit. I used to think the obvious, that it's just a cute high school girl that goes around stabbing vampires in the heart. But now with all of the metaphors of the monsters representing the teen social life issues and all of the other twists I think I might enjoy the show.

The fact that the show is actually centered around metaphors I think gives it a more respectable and watchable tone than most teenage dramas. Metaphors always find a way to confuse us, (well me at least) but then someone says "well that was a metaphor for this" and I slap myself on the back of the head and look forward to trying to unravel the metaphor next time. And knowing that the show is full of metaphors gives us some feeling of anticipation to try and crack these metaphor codes during episodes, and that makes the viewing all the more exciting!

My Important Scene

My important scene came from the second episode of Firefly, "The Train Job". The important scene was the one in which Captain Mal and Zoey (I believe that's her name) found out that the goods they stole were medicine. They sat there in holding and Mal said something to the effect of "This is so terrible", and Zoey thought that he was worried about getting caught for stealing the goods. What the captain was actually thinking was how terrible it was to see all the sick people that were also on the train.

Again, although he is very stern and all about business, the captain shows his good judgment and that he is a decent man. We have seen this before, the captain showing his sensitive side when the time calls. He definitely keeps his tough outer shell, but he is always willing to do the right thing. The scene was so important because it showed that the captain is generous deep down, and I think this may have some significance down the road.

Writer’s Blog 1 Post

I decided that my First-Day Writing wasn’t all that interesting, but I did mention one subject that I think is pretty interesting and maybe even entertaining; C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, and “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” in particular.

I think these books are absolutely fascinating, and the Chronicles is the only book series I have ever read completely. Lewis’ writing style is very capturing and at times even heart-warming, and that makes these books easy reads. Other factors that make the Chronicles so entertaining are the likable characters, classic conflict of good against evil, and deep meaning behind the books.

In case you didn’t know, each of the seven books in the fantasy series is based off of a story from the bible. “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” is actually the story of Jesus, which I didn’t realize until after I found out this fact, and then it made perfect sense. The weird thing is that so many people read this book and the others in the series and never pick up on this.

Although “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” may not be considered Science Fiction, I would definitely suggest it to anyone, as it was an all-time favorite of all of the kids in my class who read it in 6th grade. It doesn’t really matter what your religious beliefs are, either. It’s just a great book. When Lewis tells the story, he has some sort of ability to connect with the reader, and it feels a lot more like you’re sitting by the fireplace listening to Grandpa’s stories than simply reading to yourself. It is easy to find the child inside of yourself when you read this C.S. Lewis classic, and the other six novels in the series.

Serenity

Ok so I just finished watching Serenity, which is equivalent in time to a full-length Disney film. At times, especially in the beginning while I was waiting for the plot to unfold, I was rather impatient and felt like I was waiting. But as things got going it seemed like the action stayed high and I started to enjoy the show a lot.
I definitely appreciated the fun and excitement of Science Fiction without all of the aliens and off-the-wall plots. The drama and intensity of it all was right up my alley. The little twists kept coming, too, and they added a lot of suspense and excitement, such as the "reavers", the doctor's sister, and the revealing of the government agent on board.
My overall opinion of the show is definitely positive. I have not watched much good scifi in my day and this show is one of the best scifi productions I have seen. I think one of the main ingredients to a great show or movie is complication. Complicated plots, to me, always seem to be successful when they are well put-together. I think a great example of this is the Pirates of the Caribbean series, with many twists and turns in the action.
I do have a funny feeling about the "ambassador" on the ship, though....

Get to know me!

Hey all you bloggers! My full name is Zachary Evan Ryan, born September 24, 1990. Yes my birthday was yesterday, feel guilty if you didn't tell me happy birthday! I am an Animal Sciences major from Warren, OH and I really don't know what I want as a career. I used to be on the pre-veterinary track, but now I am thinking of working as an animal behavioralist, with exotics or possibly marine animals. This is a big disappointment to all my friends and family at home that have said "I will be bringing my dog to you when you become a veterinarian."
Well I'm a pretty easy-going guy. I am a real clown, too, which you guys will find out in class. I enjoy a variety of different things like video games, outdoors, many different styles of music, working at the vet's office, and goin' out and having fun. I am also one the students in the class in Mount Leadership Society, which is quickly becoming like another family to me. If you want to know anything else, or if you just want to tell me how cool I am, then comment on the blog!
